About Me

I’m Sandra Howell

I have over 3 decades experience of writing a variety of documents for different careers including: leaflets, newsletters, briefings, reports, training guides, speeches and submissions to hearings.  In 2016, I retired as a National Officer, from the trade union UNISON, on the grounds of ill-health, due to my disability from a road traffic collision 10 years prior.

I started writing flash fiction in 2016 and theatre reviews in 2017. I write about a range of issues including racism, my childhood and current affairs, using different forms of poetry. I sing in a choir which performs twice a year. I love kayaking and swimming.

Poetry Bio

My first poem, ‘Angry Black Woman,’ is part of my trilogy, ‘We Matter: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow,’ published by Collage Arts, (now Writing Room), on YouTube and Soundcloud in 2020. Also in 2020, Collage Arts commissioned me to write a lockdown diary, which I entitled ‘Life Cycles,’ a mixture of poetry, prose and song. My poetry has been published by Writing Room, Wildfire Words, Hidden Literature, Tin Can Poetry, in a ‘Black in White’ Anthology, and in ‘The Horizonary A-Z: A Collaboration’ poetry pamphlet.

Performing at numerous poetry events across London, since January 2023, I have featured at seven, including being selected to perform my poem ‘Femininity’ at the Southbank Centre in October 2023.

My poetry has been displayed in several art shows including: at the West Reservoir Centre in October 2023 and February 2024, City Lit’s ‘The Colour of Language,’ in 2023 and 2024, and an exhibition, at hARTtslane Gallery, on 23rd to 25th May 2025, of ‘The Horizonary A-Z: A Collaboration’ poetry booklet, in which my poem ‘Consumption,’ is published.

I was one of the featured speakers at Emily Wood Ramirez Ahmed‘s exhibition of her paintings ‘Why We Swim’, in February 2025. I enjoyed reading my poems and discussing the benefits of water, whether as a kayaker, or swimmer.

Limited edition art prints of my selected poems, are on sale on this website here
